Big on efficiency, style and performance this is by far the coolest Plug-in Hybrid concept I have seen so far. The Audi A1 Sportback sports a 1.4-liter TSI gas burning engine equipped with both a turbo and supercharger and a 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor.

Working together in hybrid mode the two engines propel the A1 from 0 to 62mph in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 124mph all the while getting 72.4 mpg! Or you can switch to pure electric mode and drive approximately 60 miles sans petrol.

The A1 also boasts what they call a 2nd Gen “Infotainment” system. Now this is not part of the sustainability set of options but it’s pretty cool so I figured I’d share. The navigation, Audio/video, car phone and contact database are all integrated into your WLAN capable cell phone.

The system also allows you to remotely monitor and control you A1, for example closing the windows if it’s going to rain. You can also set a parking monitor program that will calculate your proximity to the car and tell you when you need to leave to go pay the meter or guide you back to your car in a parking garage.

I guess that could be considered a eco-friendly amenity, just think how much less carbon dioxide you you’ll be breathing out if you never have to search every floor of a parking garage again!

Slated to be produced in 2009, I’m counting the minutes!

    14. [...]   This new concept by Audi is the coolest hybrid car you will see for a while. It’s supposed to start production next year, but with all of the features it’s got, it can’t come soon enough. The car can take you up to 124 mph and gets you 72.4 mpg. Or, you could switch to all-electric mode, and drive for about 60 miles. Also, the new system puts your navigation, audio and visual onto your cell phone, that also lets you remote control your car - like the Batmobile. So you can close your windows if it’s going to rain, find out when your parking meter is almost up, and map out exactly where you left your car in the parking garage. Check out more pictures of the new Audi concept right here. [...]

    15. [...] This concept from Audi is probably the coolest looking hybrid vehicle concept out there. The Audi A1 Sportback is powered by a 1.4 liter TSI gas burning engine equipped with both a turbo and supercharger (INSANE RIGHT!) and a 20 kw electric motor. In Hybrid mode the 2 engines propel the A1 from 0 to 60 in like 8 seconds. Now that isn’t blistering fast but for a hybrid that is peppy. There is an all electric mode too that can drive for 60 miles without using gas. Not bad! All that and it looks pretty freakin’ hot. It’s slated for a 2009 production and should be hitting the US market for sure. I can’t wait personally, this could be my next car. [...]
