GE Abandons Incandescent Bulbs

The incandescent light bulbs days are numbered. First they were vilified in the media for their gross inefficiency, then the price of their more efficient rival CFLs came down to make them a cost effective alternative, then countries started talking about banning them all together, finally the biggest champion of bulb that started it all, GE announced that it is discontinuing the iconic glass globe.

Back in February GE announced that it was working on the HEI (High Efficiency Incandescent) bulb that would rival the CFL's energy efficiency without the use of toxic mercury. Alas, HEI has gone dim as GE announced that it is discontinuing investment in incandescent technology to redouble efforts on LED and OLEDs.
