Created by a team of students at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, the Swift Solar car earns the title of "World's Fastest Solar-Powered Car" by speeding over an airstrip in Nowra, Australia, at over 88 kilometres per hour (55 MPH).
The team built the car from scratch last year. Its teardrop shape was chosen for its aerodynamics and to minimize drag. It typically uses batteries to store the sun's energy but they were removed for this race to test its energy efficiency alone (New Scientist).
